U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence said today that denuclearization of the North Korean peninsula is still possible without conflict. This reassuring statement came after weeks of mounting fears of war with North Korea, and President Trump’s constant warning that the US will do everything possible to protect South Korea and the US mainland from the nuclear threat of North Korea.
Pence feels reassured that warmed relations between the US and China has made the possibility of peace more tangible, and feels confident that increased understanding and cooperation between Washington and Beijing is the key to restricting North Korea’s nuclear program without military intervention.
“We are encouraged by the steps that China has taken so far,” he said today, speaking at a joint press conference with Austrailian PM Malcolm Turnbull.
“We truly believe that, as our allies in the region and China bring that pressure to bear, there is a chance that we can achieve a historic objective of a nuclear-free Korea peninsula by peaceful means.”
These words are reassuring in the face of recent current events. While the Trump administration began the year with worrisome tension with China, this change in diplomatic tones is a good sign. Also, since Russia had been warning against conflict with North Korea, it’s always good to have one less point of tension between the US and the Kremlin.
Hopefully, this story will fizzle out, and we will remain at peace with North Korea, China, and Russia. But only time will tell.
