When you need to make fire, one of the most important elements is some good tinder. We feel it’s important to always have some tinder material available. Put it in some airtight containers, such as an old Altoids tin and put it your bug out bag, your tackle box, your hiking pants pockets, your car and anywhere else you can think. Now, here are some simple ways to get your tinder.
First, you can use the tried and true trick of cotton balls covered in Vaseline. The Vaseline is flammable. When you light it, the cotton will burn for quite a while, which should give you plenty of time to start a fire.
Another nice and simple method of getting your tinder is to collect dryer lint. All that lint that you’ve been throwing away can now be put to good use. It burns well and should be a part of every bug out bag. The one caveat to this is that it needs to be very dry to catch fire.
Birch bark and cedar bark shavings are a good option as well. Both are light materials that are easy to carry with you, and they tend to be quite easy to find in the woods as well, for that matter. You can often collect these as you are hiking. The same is true of cattails, as they can burn quite well. However, cattails are not available in all areas.
These are some of the best and simple tinder options for those who need to start a fire. Of course, you can’t have a fire with tinder alone. Make sure you know everything else you need to start a fire and be sure you know how to use it. It’s generally a good idea to know several methods, including primitive methods, of starting a fire.
