SURVIVAL STRONGHOLD · DAILY INSTALL · NOVEMBER 3, 2026
FIND THE WATER SHUTOFF. home water shutoff valve with a tag, cold pipe and vintage plumbing diagram

Your Daily Install takes something happening now, looks at what happened before, and gives you one thing to do at home.

Print the worksheet and add it to your Household Resilience Network binder.

What’s happening now?

November is a good time to check one thing before freezing nights. If water started spilling from a pipe, would the next person home know where to stop it?

The first few minutes can go to searching behind boxes or calling someone who knows the house. A clear path and a label can make that time easier to use.

Has this happened before?

In February 2021, hard freezes hit Austin and much of Texas. Austin Water asked people with burst pipes to shut off water if they could do so safely. Crews and customers were dealing with many problems at once.

What happened next?

A home shutoff could give a household a way to stop water feeding a broken line while waiting for help. That option depends on knowing where the right valve is before the leak.

What can I do?

Find the main shutoff for your home. If you rent or live in a shared building, ask management who can shut it off and save the after-hours number. Clear the path and label the valve if you know it is the right one. Ask another person to point to it. Leave a stuck valve alone and ask a plumber about it.
