The Current Signal

ERCOT-related reporting today projected Texas demand near 89,897 megawatts as triple-digit heat spread across the state. ERCOT’s own 2026 summer materials had already warned that peak demand could surpass the 2023 all-time summer record.

That does not mean an outage is guaranteed.

It means heat is a systems test. The grid gets tested. Air conditioners get tested. Household habits get tested.

In 1977, heat, load, lightning, and civic stress all landed on the same switch.

Parallel 1: New York’s 1977 Blackout

On July 13, 1977, New York woke to hot, humid weather at the start of one of the longest heat waves in the city’s history. PBS notes the temperature would top 100 degrees three times over the next nine days.

That same night, lightning hit high-voltage lines outside the city. More lines failed. Over about an hour, the Con Edison system cascaded toward collapse. By roughly 9:40 p.m., all five boroughs were in the dark.

The blackout is remembered for looting, fires, and civic pain. But for a household, the first lesson is smaller and more physical: when electricity disappears during heat, the apartment or house changes shape. Elevators stop. Fans stop. Refrigerators warm. The coolest room matters. The nearest stairs matter. Water matters. Neighbors matter.

This is not a claim that today’s grid is 1977 New York. The systems, safeguards, and forecasting tools are different.

The narrow pattern is still useful: heat turns comfort into load, and load turns small household choices into resilience choices. If every room depends on powered cooling, you do not have a cool-room plan. You have a thermostat wish.

Ancient builders treated cool air like a system, not a luxury.

Parallel 2: The Persian Windcatcher

Long before electric air conditioning, builders in hot, dry parts of Iran used badgirs, or windcatchers, to pull air through buildings. In cities such as Yazd, tall towers caught higher air, directed it downward, and worked with shaded courtyards, thick walls, water, and nighttime temperature swings.

The point was not magic. It was design. Openings faced the useful wind. Heavy materials slowed heat. Air moved through the structure instead of sitting still. In some systems, air passed over water or cooler underground spaces before entering living areas.

That is the part worth stealing for a modern house. You may not have a wind tower, a courtyard, or desert masonry. But you do have rooms with different sun exposure. You have curtains. You have doors. You may have a fan, a battery pack, a basement, a north-facing room, or a shaded hallway.

Ancient cooling was not “turn the whole building down three degrees.” It was create a path for air, reduce direct sun, and protect the livable zone.

The scale is different. The household question is the same: where will your cool air live when the easy cooling gets expensive, overloaded, or briefly unavailable?

Set a timer for 18 minutes.

1. Pick the room

Choose the coolest room you have: north-facing bedroom, basement room, shaded living room, interior hallway, or the room with the fewest windows.

2. Block the sun

Close blinds or curtains. If needed, tape foil, cardboard, a blanket, or a spare sheet over the worst window for the hot hours.

3. Stage the basics

Add water, a thermometer, phone charger, battery bank, medications, pet water, and one quiet activity for kids.
