The small household move: stop trying to cool the whole house first. Pick the room where the body is supposed to recover and make that room work.

The Current Signal
The Climate Prediction Center's July 19, 2026 U.S. Week-2 Hazards Outlook says a moderate risk of extreme heat covers much of the Great Plains, adjacent Mississippi Valley, southern High Plains, and Desert Southwest for July 27 to 29.
It also lists a slight risk of extreme heat for the southern California Valley, the Southwest, parts of the Intermountain West, much of the Rockies, the Plains and adjacent Mississippi Valley, the Gulf Coast, and adjacent Southeast from July 27 through August 2.
That does not mean every reader has the same forecast.
It means the household pattern is live: when hot days stack up, the recovery room matters as much as the afternoon temperature.
Parallel 1: Chicago, July 1995

Chicago's lesson was not just heat. It was failed nighttime recovery and missed checks.
From July 12 to 16, 1995, Chicago baked under a heat wave that still reads like a warning label.
CDC reported maximum daily temperatures from 93 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. On July 13, the heat index peaked at 119 degrees, a city record. During July 11 to 27, the Cook County Medical Examiner certified 465 deaths as heat-related.
The detail that should stick in the household mind is not only the number. It is the timing.
Deaths peaked two days after the heat index peaked. Heat built up in bodies, rooms, routines, and neighborhoods. The danger did not stop when the sun went down. In many homes, it followed people into the night.
CDC's prevention note is direct: heat-related mortality is preventable, and the most effective measures include reducing physical activity, drinking additional nonalcoholic liquids, and increasing time in air-conditioned environments. CDC also warned that fans are not protective in some high-heat, high-humidity conditions.
That last point matters because it corrects a common household mistake.
A fan is not a plan if the room is too hot and humid to let the body shed heat. A hot bedroom with moving air can still be a bad recovery room.
The comparison to today's forecast is narrow. NOAA's week-2 outlook is not a Chicago 1995 prediction.
But the sequence is familiar: heat stacks, the body fails to recover, and the people who needed a check most may be the least likely to ask for one.
The lesson for tonight is brutally practical. Pick the room. Check the person. Cool the recovery window before the heat gets a vote.
Parallel 2: Persian Windcatchers

Ancient cooling design began with airflow, shade, and one room worth protecting.
Now move the camera to the hot, dry cities of ancient and medieval Persia, especially places such as Yazd.
Long before powered air conditioning, builders used windcatchers, or badgirs, to pull air through buildings. Some towers were shaped to catch prevailing winds. Others used pressure differences, shaded courtyards, thick walls, water features, and nighttime air to move heat out and cooler air in.
The ancient lesson is not that a modern family should build a clay tower on the roof this weekend.
The lesson is that cooling was treated as a design problem, not a wish.
A windcatcher worked because the house had an assigned airflow path. Hot air had somewhere to leave. Cooler air had a way to enter. Shade reduced the load before the cooling system had to fight it. The structure did not wait for comfort to happen; it arranged conditions so comfort had a chance.
That is exactly the household principle for a heat week.
You are not trying to cool every room equally. You are deciding which room becomes the recovery room, then arranging shade, airflow, water, charging, and check-ins around that room.
The scale is different. Yazd's architecture is not a suburban bedroom.
But the pattern is useful: heat preparedness begins by assigning air, shade, and recovery to a specific space. The household that names the room can improve it. The household that vaguely says "stay cool" may not notice the weak spot until midnight.
Ancient cooling was not magic. It was a map.

When the house is hot, nobody wants the extra errand. Shelf-stable food gives the household one less reason to leave during the worst window.
