On July 22, Texas grid demand reportedly reached a new all-time high during extreme heat, while NOAA's July 22 hazards outlook warned that dangerous heat would expand across large parts of the central and western U.S. and linger in parts of the Southeast.

The important household question is not, "Will the grid fail?"

The better question is: if the house gets hot, which room are we defending first?

Parallel 1: Chicago, July 1995

The 1995 Chicago heat wave showed that room conditions and check-ins can become survival systems.

From July 12 to July 16, 1995, Chicago lived through one of the deadliest heat events in modern U.S. history.

The CDC reported that during July 11-27, 465 deaths were certified as heat-related by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Deaths rose sharply after the heat index peaked, with the highest daily count on July 15.

The detail that matters for households is not just the number.

It is the room.

Many victims were older residents, often living alone, often in apartments where air conditioning was unavailable, unaffordable, or unused. Some were afraid to open windows at night. Some had nobody checking early enough. Heat became deadly when it trapped people inside spaces with no cooler zone and no fast decision rule.

A modern household is not 1995 Chicago. The scale and setting may be completely different.

But the narrowing lesson is useful: heat readiness is not only a forecast app. It is a room plan and a people plan.

If you know which room stays coolest, where water is staged, who gets checked on, and when you leave for a cooling center or another home, heat has fewer chances to turn confusion into delay.

Parallel 2: Persian Windcatchers And Courtyards

Ancient passive cooling treated airflow, shade, and water as a system.

Long before electric air conditioning, builders in hot, dry parts of Persia used architecture as a cooling tool.

Windcatchers, known as badgirs, rose above homes and water reservoirs. Their job was to move air, create cross-ventilation, and in some designs pull warmer air out while guiding cooler air through shaded interior spaces. In cities such as Yazd, towers and courtyards worked with thick walls, shade, and evaporative cooling.

The fascinating part is how practical the idea was.

Ancient builders did not think of cooling as one machine in one window. They thought in paths: where air enters, where shade falls, where water sits, where people gather during the worst hours.

Your house does not need a Persian tower to borrow the pattern.

The situations are not identical, but the household logic rhymes: choose the best space, reduce direct sun, manage airflow, keep water close, and concentrate activity where conditions are safest.

A cool-room plan is not glamorous. That is why it works. It turns cooling from a vague hope into a small system you can point to.

1. Pick the coolest room

Choose the room with the least afternoon sun, lowest floor, best shade, or easiest access to bathroom and water.

2. Cut one heat path

Close blinds, hang a towel over the hottest window, or block sun from one doorway.

3. Stage water and power

Put water, a charged phone, flashlight, battery bank, and any small fan in that room.

4. Write one check-in rule

If the room hits a temperature we are not comfortable with, we call or leave before waiting longer.
