THE CURRENT SIGNAL
AP reported Saturday that severe weather had killed at least five people in Indiana. Storm damage stretched from the Chicago area toward western Pennsylvania.
More than a dozen Indiana counties declared local disasters. Officials said much of the newest damage followed river corridors from Hamilton County into the northern Indianapolis suburbs.
Days earlier, the same broad storm pattern knocked out power to hundreds of thousands across parts of the Midwest. Flooded roads slowed or blocked help in some communities.
The point is not to guess where the next storm lands.
The point is to notice how a household gets cut apart: home on one side, medicine or family on the other, and one low road between them.
Here is the mental model: a flooded road is a locked door with no visible lock.
It may look shallow. The road under it may be gone. Moving water can push a car, hide debris, or deepen in seconds.
The safest time to decide “I will not cross” is while the pavement is dry.
PARALLEL #1: THE GREAT EASTER FLOOD OF 1913

In 1913, water erased roads, bridges, and the time people thought they still had.
In late March 1913, a chain of storms stalled over the Midwest.
Rain fell on ground that was already wet. Rivers rose across Ohio, Indiana, and nearby states. The disaster became known as the Great Easter Flood.
In Indiana, the White, Wabash, and other rivers spread far beyond their banks. Towns lost bridges, rail lines, telegraph links, roads, and power.
Peru, Indiana, was hit especially hard. Water poured into the city. People climbed to upper floors and roofs. Rescue boats moved through streets that had stopped being streets.
The flood did not only damage buildings.
It broke movement.
A bridge that worked in the morning could be closed by afternoon. A road home could turn into a river edge. Messages moved slowly because the same storm damaged the wires and rails that carried news and help.
Across the wider region, the 1913 flood killed hundreds of people and caused vast damage. The event pushed cities and states to rethink flood control, river gauges, levees, reservoirs, and public warnings.
Modern forecasting, roads, emergency alerts, and rescue systems are far better than they were in 1913.
But one part of the story has not changed.
A household can lose a route before it loses the house.
People often prepare for what happens inside the building: lights, food, water, first aid.
They prepare less often for the ten-minute drive to a pharmacy, school, parent, or safe place.
The 1913 lesson is not “expect the same flood.”
It is “treat route failure as its own emergency.”
If one bridge, underpass, creek road, or river crossing sits between you and a must-reach place, that crossing deserves a backup before the rain begins.
PARALLEL #2: EGYPT READS THE NILOMETER

Ancient Egypt turned a rising river into a marked line people could read before the water moved north.
Ancient Egypt lived by the Nile.
The river’s yearly rise brought water and rich soil to farm fields. Too little water could mean hunger. Too much could wash through homes, fields, paths, and store rooms.
The flood started far to the south. The water then moved north through the long river valley.
Egyptians needed more than a guess.
They measured.
A nilometer was a set of marks, steps, a well, or another stone structure tied to the river level. One famous site stands on Elephantine Island near modern Aswan, close to Egypt’s southern edge.
The corridor there has a stairway that drops toward the Nile. Marks on the stone showed how high the river stood.
Flood height records also appear in Egypt’s long written history. The number mattered because water shaped crops, canal work, food supply, and taxes.
The nilometer did not stop a flood.
It did something just as important.
It changed rising water from a rumor into a trigger.
A line on stone could tell officials and farmers that the river had crossed a known point. Dikes and canals could be made ready. Plans could change before the same water reached land farther north.
Modern river gauges, radar, alerts, roads, and emergency teams are far beyond ancient tools.
But the old idea still works.
A warning becomes useful when it is tied to a line and an action.
Your household nilometer is not made of stone.
It is the line on your No-Go Water Card.
If water covers the road edge, turn around.
If the local gauge reaches the level tied to your road, use the high route.
If a flash flood warning names your route, do not start the trip.
The comparison is narrow. A nilometer guided a whole river society. Your card guides a few drivers.
Both fix the same human weakness: people bargain with danger when the trigger stays vague.
Mark the line while the road is dry.
WHAT IF THE TAP BECOMES THE NEXT ROAD THAT CLOSES?
Floodwater can foul a normal water source. An outage can stop a pump. One household water backup turns “we hope the tap works” into a second option you can reach without leaving home.
THE PATTERN TO NOTICE
Across BOTH examples, the pattern is this: water wins the argument when people wait until the route is already failing.
HOUSEHOLD LESSON
A backup route is not “another line on a map.”
It must avoid the same river, low underpass, bridge, or drainage path that can close the first route.
Make the high route boring.
It may take ten more minutes. It may use roads you do not like. That is fine.
A backup route is not meant to win a race. It is meant to keep the same flood from taking both choices.
Drive it once on a clear day. Look for gates, road work, sharp turns, dead phone spots, and another low bridge you missed on the map.
Then tell the whole house the same rule: no one gets in trouble for turning around early.

1. Pick one place your household may need during bad weather: school, pharmacy, parent, work, hospital, or shelter.
2. Write the normal route.
3. Find a second route that stays farther from rivers, creeks, low bridges, and underpasses.
4. Write one trigger: “If water covers the road, I turn around.”
5. Add one outside contact who can receive a text if local calls fail.
6. Take a photo of the card and send it to every driver in the house.
Measured improvement: one must-reach place now has two routes and one shared no-go rule.
STATUS CHECK
If both routes cross the same low bridge, you still have one route.
If every driver knows the high route and the turn-around trigger, you have a usable plan.
