Associated Press reporting says record-setting flooding in Indiana killed at least seven people, forced evacuations, damaged homes and infrastructure, and left major outages behind. The White River reached record levels in several communities.
A prepper does not need to predict whether that exact storm reaches his county. He needs to notice the failure pattern. Water attacks low storage first. Power often goes with it. Roads may close while you are still deciding what to save.
The strongest response is boring and physical: raise the things that preserve identity, health, communication, food, and recovery.

Water is too important to leave as a single-point dependency. This at-home system is built around giving the household another option before access or quality becomes urgent.
PARALLEL 1: THE 1927 MISSISSIPPI FLOOD BROKE THE “LEVEE ONLY” IDEA
The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 became one of the most destructive floods in American history. Levees failed across the lower Mississippi valley. Millions of acres flooded and huge numbers of people were forced from their homes.
Near Vicksburg, the National Park Service says the river spread nearly eighty miles wide in places. When the levee at Mounds Landing failed, water reached towns dozens of miles from the main river.
The disaster also exposed a strategic mistake. Flood protection had leaned heavily on the idea that levees alone could confine the river. After 1927, federal policy moved toward a broader system that included floodways, cutoffs, strengthened levees, and other controls.
The lesson was layered defense. One barrier can be valuable and still fail. A second layer changes what happens next.
Your basement wall is not a Mississippi levee. But the household version of layered defense is straightforward: drainage outside, barriers at openings, critical gear raised inside, and a plan to leave if water wins.
PARALLEL 2: MOHENJO-DARO PUT DRAINAGE INTO THE CITY ITSELF
Around four thousand years ago, cities of the Indus civilization built water management into ordinary streets and homes.
At Mohenjo-daro, archaeologists found covered brick drains running through streets and lanes. Water from bathing floors and upper stories was routed through pipes or chutes toward street drains. Settling pits collected material so drains could be cleaned.
The system was not perfect, and scholars still debate exactly how every part functioned. But its design shows something important: water disposal was not an afterthought added only to rich buildings. It was part of the city’s physical layout.
That is the prepper lesson. Resilience is strongest when it lives in the layout, not only in a tote labeled “emergency.” Gear on shelves, documents in waterproof storage, batteries off concrete floors, and clear drainage paths are architecture-level decisions.
A modern home has better materials and better warning tools than an Indus city. The basic principle survives: route water away, and keep critical capability out of its path.
Across BOTH examples, the pattern is this: the first defense matters, but survival improves when the next layer is already built.

Do not wait for a flood warning to decide what cannot sit on the floor.

Walk the basement, garage, utility room, or lowest storage area.
Find five items that would be expensive, slow, or impossible to replace quickly: documents, medication, radios, batteries, tools, stored food, or backup devices.
Move them to shelving or storage clearly above floor level.
Put paper records and small electronics in water-resistant containers where practical.
Take one photo of the new storage and label it HIGH-WATER LINE.
Measured improvement: five pieces of household capability are no longer sitting in the first flood zone.
