On September 3, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled about 32,400 XO Poppy magnetic wireless power banks because their lithium-ion batteries can overheat and ignite.
No injuries were reported in that recall.
But the household lesson is bigger than one model number.
A backup is not ready because you own it. It is ready because you identified it, checked it, charged it, and know what replaces it if it fails.
Preparedness gear quietly ages.
Batteries swell.
Cables disappear.
Model numbers get forgotten.

CURRENT SIGNAL — THE BACKUP NEEDS A BACKUP
The recalled XO Poppy power banks were sold at TJX and Marshalls stores nationwide from April 2025 through March 2026.
CPSC says consumers should stop using the recalled model immediately and follow the recall instructions rather than putting the lithium-ion device into ordinary household trash or curbside recycling.
That specificity matters.
The warning is not “all power banks are dangerous.”
It is one product, one model family, one hazard.
Which means the household has to be able to answer a basic question:
What exactly is the battery sitting in my drawer?
Picture an outage six months from now.
The room is dark. The phone is low. Somebody remembers the power bank in the junk drawer.
If nobody knows the model, the age, whether it has swollen, whether the cable still works, or whether it holds a charge, the “backup” becomes a guess.
That is not a reason to fear batteries.
It is a reason to maintain them.
Preparedness gear has a shelf life even when the emergency never arrives.
THE FAUCET DOESN'T SEND A LOW-BATTERY WARNING
Most homes discover their water dependency only after the pressure is gone.

Iniki showed how quickly electricity, telephone service and water pumping can fail together.
PARALLEL 1 — 1992: WHEN KAUAI'S LIFELINES FAILED TOGETHER
On September 11, 1992, Hurricane Iniki struck Kauai with devastating force.
The storm knocked down thousands of utility poles. Electrical and telephone systems failed. Electric water pumps stopped working, cutting water service to homes. Emergency communication between Kauai and Oahu also went down.
The Hawaii Department of Defense's history of the storm describes 14,340 homes damaged, roughly 5,000 severely damaged or destroyed, and thousands of people needing food and water.
One detail matters for today's Install:
the failures were connected.
The power outage was not only about lights.
It affected communications.
It affected water pumping.
It affected the ability to know what was happening next.
Recovery crews had to restore communication, move supplies by air and rebuild basic systems.
No household battery could have solved Hurricane Iniki.
That is not the lesson.
The lesson is that one small power source becomes more valuable when it is assigned to a specific critical job before the main system fails.
Phone.
Radio.
Light.
Medical device.

Athens protected naval capability between emergencies by hauling triremes ashore, storing them under cover and maintaining the ships and gear before they were needed.
PARALLEL 2 — ATHENS: A WARSHIP WAS NOT A BACKUP UNTIL IT WAS READY
In the fourth century BCE, Athens kept one of the ancient Mediterranean's most formidable backup systems inside the harbors of Piraeus.
The system was not a warehouse full of weapons.
It was a fleet.
Hundreds of long, narrow triremes could move rowers and fighting power across the sea when Athens needed them.
But owning a trireme was not the same as having one ready.
A wooden warship left in the water too long could become heavier from waterlogging. Marine growth and shipworm could attack the hull. Sun, salt, weather, ropes, sails, oars, and fittings all created maintenance work between campaigns.
So Piraeus was lined with covered shipsheds where triremes could be hauled out of the water onto sloped ramps.
By 330/329 BCE, surviving Athenian inventories list 372 shipsheds across the three Piraeus harbors.
Those sheds protected more than wood.
They protected readiness.
Crews could inspect hulls and make repairs. Oars and removable equipment could be checked. Rigging and sails were stored separately in dedicated naval storehouses so the gear did not have to be rediscovered after the alarm sounded.
The harbor itself became a giant readiness checklist:
SHIP / CONDITION / GEAR / STORAGE / CREW.
That is the part worth carrying into a modern house.
A power bank in a drawer is a possession.
A generator with stale fuel, a missing cable, or an unknown model is a possession.
A radio with corroded batteries is a possession.
The backup becomes capability only after somebody keeps it ready between emergencies.
Athens did not have a navy simply because it owned triremes.
It had a navy because an entire dockyard system existed to keep ships and gear usable before the day they were needed.
Your household version is much smaller.
One model number.
One inspection.
One test.
One second path.
That is why you do it while the lights are still on.
