Hurricane Lowell is approaching Hawaii. The Central Pacific Hurricane Center said this morning that rainbands were spreading over Kauai and Oahu, with Lowell carrying maximum sustained winds of 115 mph at the 2 a.m. HST update.
A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Kauai County.
The forecast will change as the storm moves. The household lesson does not.
The last safe hour is the hour when the chair is still a chair — before the wind decides it is debris.
Preparedness gets easier when you stop imagining the worst scene and fix the boring loose thing first.

The National Hurricane Center’s Lowell advisory is useful because the timeline is still moving.
Rainbands can arrive before the center. Winds strengthen in exposed places. Roads can become poor choices before a house is in direct danger.

None feels like survival gear.
That is exactly why they are good first actions.

The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 devastated the middle Florida Keys and killed hundreds, including World War I veterans working on the Overseas Highway.
PARALLEL 1 — 1935: THE TRAIN COULD NOT OUTRUN THE LAST WINDOW
Labor Day 1935 began with a hurricane small enough to be hard to read and powerful enough to rewrite storm history.
In the Florida Keys, hundreds of World War I veterans were living in work camps while employed on a federal Overseas Highway project.
Forecasting was far more limited than it is today.
The Weather Bureau had only recently reorganized hurricane forecasting into regional offices. The storm intensified rapidly as it approached the middle Keys.
Officials arranged an evacuation train from Miami to bring people out.
But the timing collapsed.
The train was delayed along the route. By the time it reached the Keys, the storm surge and wind were already overwhelming the area.
The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane became a Category 5 disaster and killed hundreds of people, including many of the veterans.
The National Weather Service history calls it a very small but viciously intense storm.
The human tragedy is much larger than any household checklist, and we should not turn it into a clever analogy.
The narrow preparedness lesson is about the shrinking decision window.
An evacuation plan can exist on paper and still fail if it begins after travel has become difficult.
A loose yard item is not an evacuation train.
But both obey time.
The action that is easy at 10 a.m. can become unsafe at 2 p.m.
That is why today’s Wind Walk is intentionally boring.
It spends the safe window on the tasks that become stupid later.

Southern Mesopotamian cities depended on canals, levees and continual water-management work because the same rivers that fed fields could also flood them.
PARALLEL 2 — MESOPOTAMIA: THE CANAL ONLY WORKED WHILE PEOPLE KEPT WORKING ON IT
The first cities of southern Mesopotamia grew on a landscape that was both generous and dangerous.
The Tigris and Euphrates brought water into a dry plain.
They also flooded unpredictably.
The Metropolitan Museum notes that the region’s famous agricultural abundance was not the plain’s natural state. People created it by learning to manage water in a place with damaging floods and unreliable rainfall.
That meant canals.
It meant levees.
It meant controlling where water went before the river chose the route.
University of Chicago research shows that southern Mesopotamian agriculture used elevated river levees and canal networks to move irrigation water by gravity while also dealing with floodwater and drainage.
The hard part was not digging a canal once.
Channels silted.
Embankments needed maintenance.
Watercourses moved.
One old Oriental Institute study describes major levees being maintained for long periods and spoil banks needing regular removal so canals could continue to function.
That is the ancient storm lesson worth borrowing.
A protective system is built during ordinary weather and maintained before the water arrives.
The Mesopotamians were managing river systems on a scale far beyond a modern patio.
But the timing rule is identical.
You clear the path before it is full.
You reinforce the weak edge before the crest.
You move the loose object before the gust.
After the hazard arrives, maintenance turns into response.
Response is always more expensive.
