Thousands of customers in Los Angeles lost power during extreme heat this week. The city utility said overloaded equipment from heat and humidity caused outages on September 9 and 10.

That report is local. It does not mean your power will fail today.

It shows a chain worth planning for: hot weather raises electric demand, stressed equipment fails, air conditioning stops, and the home begins to store more heat.

A charged phone helps with alerts. It does not cool a person. A freezer plan protects food. It does not tell the family which room to use first.

It is 4:10 on the afternoon of August 14, 2003. Picture a mother named Renee in a tenth-floor apartment. The lamp blinks once. Then the room goes dark.

At first, it feels like one simple problem. The light is off. Renee reaches for her phone.

Then the elevator stops. The hallway loses its light. The water pump may lose pressure. Traffic lights below go dark. The apartment keeps holding the day’s heat.

Far away in Ohio, high-voltage lines had touched trees and shut down. Computer and operating problems kept the danger from being handled in time. Failures moved across the connected grid. By about 4:13 p.m., most of the cascade had already happened.

About 50 million people in eight U.S. states and Ontario lost power. Trains, elevators, stores, water systems, offices, and homes were all pulled into the same event.

Renee cannot fix the grid. She has a smaller job. She must decide which room is safest, who needs help first, what still works without a plug, and when the family should leave.

Golden nugget: The first failure gets attention. The second failure often causes the real trouble.

For a home in hot weather, the second failure is lost cooling. A phone can show an alert, but it cannot cool a person. A freezer plan can protect food, but it cannot make an upstairs room safe.

If every family had to walk to one far-off water point, each trip would take time and strength. A broken path or crowded line would make the problem worse.

But the city had many wells. It also had baked-brick streets, drains, and bathing areas. Water access was built into many parts of daily life.

The wells did not make the city safe from every flood, dry spell, or disease. Scholars still debate why the city changed and was later left behind. The lesson comes from what people can still see in the ground: an essential need was placed close to where life happened.

Asha’s walk is shorter because the well is near. That saves time on an ordinary day. On a hard day, the same short path may matter even more.
