PARALLEL 1: THE ONE-PERCENT SHORTAGE THAT MADE LONG LINES

Small supply strain became a larger street problem when millions of people changed refill behavior at once.

In May 1979, gasoline lines appeared in California. During the next three months, lines showed up in other metro areas.

The Iranian Revolution had cut oil exports. Yet a later National Petroleum Council review found a twist.

Total U.S. oil supplies during the first seven months of 1979 averaged only about 1 percent less than the same months one year before.

That small national gap did not feel small at the pump.

Low stocks, old allocation rules, efforts to rebuild company inventories, and uneven local delivery all shaped what drivers saw.

Then fear added a second shortage.

Drivers began “tank topping.” A person who might have waited bought fuel early. When millions did the same thing, stations faced a burst of demand.

Some states used odd-even sales based on license plate numbers. Stations posted new hours. Drivers waited in heat and uncertainty, sometimes only to find a pump closed.

The shortage was real, but the line was made by more than the missing oil. It was also made by timing.

Many people shared the same late refill rule: go after the problem becomes clear.

A good rule does the reverse. It acts while there is no line, no rush, and no fear.

Your household cannot control national fuel flow. It can control when one tank becomes a task.

That one rule protects time as well as fuel.

The comparison is narrow. Today is not 1979. The useful lesson is that a little lost supply plus a lot of changed behavior can create a local rush.

PARALLEL 2: PERSIA NEVER ASKED ONE HORSE TO CROSS THE EMPIRE

The Royal Road stayed fast because fresh horses and supplies waited before the courier arrived.

Around 500 B.C., the Achaemenid Persian Empire stretched across huge distances.

King Darius I needed orders and reports to move between the court and far provinces. One tired horse could not do the whole job.

The empire used roads and relay stations.

The best-known route ran from Sardis in western Anatolia to Susa. Ancient accounts describe about 2,600 kilometers of road and 111 royal stations.

At the stations, fresh couriers and horses could take over day or night.

One account says a royal message could cover the route in seven days, while an ordinary trip took far longer.

The speed did not come from a magic horse.

It came from planned replacement.

Every station was a refill line placed before the rider was tired, lost, or empty.

The stations also made the rule visible. A courier did not have to invent a new plan at every mile. The next handoff was part of the road itself.

That matters because stress makes people solve the wrong problem. A tired rider may push one horse too far. A worried driver may pass a quiet station, then join a long line near home.

A known stop removes that choice while the mind is still calm.

The empire was not a modern fuel network, and Herodotus wrote from a Greek view. The scale and tools are different.

But the readiness design is clear.

A route stays useful when energy, rest, and direction are waiting at known points. If every rider must search for the next horse after the old one fails, the fast road is only a map.
