But most household damage is local.

Galveston learned the hard way that the fix had to be built before the next surge.

Parallel 1: Galveston After 1900

On September 8, 1900, a hurricane hit Galveston, Texas.

The city was low, exposed, and sitting on a barrier island. People had no modern radar, satellite alerts, or storm-surge maps in their pockets.

The storm drove water across the island. The National Weather Service calls it the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history. Estimates often put the death toll near 8,000 people.

After the disaster, Galveston did not just clean up and hope.

Galveston built a seawall and raised much of the city by pumping sand beneath streets and buildings.

They changed the surface the water met.

They did not remove hurricane risk. They made the low path harder for the next surge.

That is the household lesson.

A house has its own smaller version of that problem. Water attacks the low, easy, unprotected path first: a stairwell drain, driveway slope, gutter seam, or leaf-filled window well.

The scale is different, but the sequence is the same: water exposes the weak path, then people either fix it or live with repeat damage.

Prepared homes do not treat drainage as yard work.

They treat it as defense.

Mohenjo-daro shows that drainage is not a detail. It is civic survival in brick form.

Parallel 2: Mohenjo-daro's Drains

More than 4,000 years ago, Mohenjo-daro stood near the Indus River in what is now Pakistan.

It sat near the Indus River, in a place where water mattered deeply. Too little water was a problem. Too much water was also a problem.

The city is famous for its planned streets, brick buildings, wells, and drainage.

Its builders planned streets, wells, bathing areas, and covered brick drains so water had a route.

A drain is a promise about where water is supposed to go.

Mohenjo-daro's builders made water movement part of daily design instead of leaving every household to guess.

Your house needs the same clarity. Roof water, driveway water, and basement water all need a route. If that route is blocked or pointed at the house, the water will still move—just not where you want it.

The old idea is sharp: drainage is not cleanup after the problem. Drainage is the plan before the problem.

That is the stronghold move.
