If you are in a location where the weather is getting cold, and you are in a survival scenario, things can start to look grim pretty quickly. However, there are some things you can do as a means to improve your survival capabilities. Let’s look at some quick and easy cold weather survival tips you can start using.
If you know you’re going to be out in cold weather, make sure you dress in layers of loose clothing. Having multiple layers is a good idea because it is able to trap air between those layers. The trapped air can then be warmed by the body, and it will act as insulation against the cold. Ideally, the outer layer is going to be windproof and waterproof.
Be wary of your activity levels. You want to be somewhat active so you can generate a little bit of body. However, you do not want to be so active that you begin to sweat. If you sweat, the moisture is going to pull heat away from your body. No matter what you are doing, make sure that you are keeping a moderate pace so you do not begin to sweat.
Find or build a shelter. Getting out of the wind and the cold in a shelter is essential if you hope to survive. Once you have a shelter, do your best to build a fire as long as you have fire building implements. It is a good idea to begin gathering the tinder and kindling before you build your shelter. You can place these smaller items inside your clothing to help keep them dry and warm while you are working.
Make sure you cover your head as well. A substantial amount of heat – 90% – is lost through the head. These are simple tips, but they should help you in a cold-weather survival situation.
