And while there is a ton of info out there about different stun guns and different types of pepper spray, there is less that actually compares the two for people trying to decide which direction to go.

Size

Size is another important item to take into consideration.  Pepper sprays usually run smaller and lighter than most stun guns.  If you are really leaning toward a stun gun, however, there are some models that are only slightly bigger than most pepper sprays and weigh almost nothing.

 

Range

Pepper sprays shot distance can be anywhere from under 6ft to over 35 feet.  Although, at that upper range you’re delving into the bear sprays, so unless you live in a very rural area, 35 FT may be overkill.

Stun guns require the ability to make physical contact with the target to work.  Even with those handy coils, you see in the movies; the range is going to be very low in comparison to spray.

Stopping power

On average both options are about 90% effective, just be aware that windy conditions may lower that number, not to mention creating conditions where you may end up with the bulk of the discharge if the direction shifts at the last minute.

 

Intimidation Factor

If you are leaning toward something that can scare off an attacker without actually having to use it, a charging stun gun can look and sound scary enough for many assailants to change their mind.

Pepper spray will probably be less of a deterrent unless you are lucky enough to have an attacker who knows what to expect and doesn’t want to go through the experience.

 

Ability to Disguise or Conceal

Each option can be concealed or otherwise disguised so you can mount a surprise attack if the situation calls for it.

 

Legal Issues

For the most part, one kind of pepper spray or another can be legally obtained and used in every city and state.  Any restrictions by city or state are usually relegated to very specific types.

Stun guns are illegal in many states. If you currently live in a state where you can legally obtain one, just make sure before you travel across state lines that you familiarize yourself with the laws in the states you will be going through.

If you really aren’t sure which way to go, consider going both ways.  Having multiple lines of defense to guard your personal safety during an attack gives you an even better chance of getting through it.
