There is a certain amount of prepping that can be done for any general disaster or survival situation, and it’s good to have a grasp of the basics. But it is also definitely wise to think about specific disasters, their likelihood of occurring in your area, and what you will need for each. It is certainly impossible to fully prepare for every imaginable natural disaster, but it is possible to expect the unexpected. You might not be ready for literally anything, but it defintely doesn’t hurt to examine the most likely scenario to happen to you based on your lifestyle, locale, and current events or weather conditions and think of some specifics to center your preparedness around.
There are of course some basics worth mentioning that will apply to any disaster, at least in the short-term:
- Clean water and/or water filtration system
- First aid and basic medical supplies
- At least 48 hours worth of food
- Flashlights, candles, and/or lamps
- Blankets and warm clothing
Here are a few hypothetical natural disasters and the specific preps you will need for each:
Earthquake:
- Earthquake drill/plan based on each possible place you might be when it strikes
- Knowledge of area’s earthquake preparedness plan, shelters, etc.
- Knowledge of fault lines in your area and likelihood of quake
- Post-quake plan for recouping and communication
- First aid for severe injury
- Tents
- Cots

- Clean water and ability to filter water
- Antibiotics and first aid relating to protecting from illness and infection
- Supplies to board up windows
- Sand bags
- Evacuation plan, including transportation of preps
Tornado
Knowledge of area’s tornado warning system, evacuation routes, emergency plans, shelters, etc.- Access to cellar, bunker, or other secure place
- Cots, bedding
- Tents
- Supplies to board up windows
