No matter how prepared you are for a bad situation, there’s always the chance that you’re missing crucial supplies. Plus, how do you restock on certain things once you’re out of them? If the worst has happened, then there are no stores, no electricity, and no way of paying for goods even if you wanted to. The world has devolved into chaos. Where do you get your supplies? Here are nine places to look.
1) Junkyards
What could you possibly need from a junkyard? The possibilities are endless. You’ll find sheet metal parts that you can use to build a shelter, parts for your vehicles that you need to keep it running, and many other things. You’d be surprised at how creative you can get should the situation present itself.
2) Abandoned Homes
This one seems obvious. However, before you start searching through abandoned homes, make sure that they’re truly abandoned. Once you know for sure that no one will shoot at you for entering, go through and hunt for what you need. You’ll find everything from parts, first aid, bottled water, and even unexpired food here.
3) Business Offices
Business offices are a good place to find things like batteries, first aid kits, and even canned foods and snack bars. They also vending machines filled with beverages. Although the computers are useless (since there’s no power or internet) you might be able to use their components for various reasons.
4) Manufacturing Companies
Since manufacturing companies, well, manufacture things, they are a good source for bulk items, like sand, salt, and bricks. On top of this, you can scavenge more than the assembly lines, since the former employee break rooms probably had vending machines and storage spaces for food.

5) Used Car Lots
If you need parts to repair your vehicle, then look no further than a used car lot. You might even find a few cars that are still capable of running (assuming that people have picked the new car lots clean.) Just hunt down the box with the keys and you have plenty of vehicles to pick from. On top of this, the cubicles and other office setups can be turned into makeshift shelters.
6) Storage Facilities
It’s amazing what people keep in their storage units. You’ll find everything from scraps of wood to furniture, from clothing to bedding, and even outdoor items like grills, tents, and backpacks. Many of these things can be reused or repurposed.
7) Cell Towers
What will you need from a cell tower? These towers are made of metal, so if you can dismantle parts of them, you can use them to build shelters, weapons, and more. However, there’s an even large perk of climbing a cell tower – being able to see for long distances. Bring your binoculars or a telescope with you, and you’ll be able to see the next city or two over. It’s good to know what else is out there.
8) Distribution Centers
Obviously, a distribution center is going to have a number of different things. While people are picking through the stores and emptying those shelves of everything useful, you lucked out by heading straight for the source. Depending on the distribution center, you’ll find shelf-stable food, housewares, home repair items, and more. It’s just a matter of claiming them.
9) Marinas
What will you find in a marina? A way to get to a major source of food – fish. You’ll also find shelter in abandoned boats, as well as things like first aid kits, packaged foods, and bedding. Plus, marinas tend to be fairly remote, so you won’t have to worry as much about other scavengers finding you.
