When you are putting together your bugout bag, you need to make sure you are packing smart and carrying everything you need. Naturally, this will include things such as water and food, vital elements for “getting out of Dodge” so to speak. However, you have to make sure you are choosing the right types of food for your go bag. You need to keep a few things in mind when you are packing your food.
You need to think about the weight of the food. You want as many calories per ounce as possible. Something that has a good shelf life is important too. Also, think about the preparation. Ideally, you want to have food that is ready to eat, and that you can eat on the go if needed. Chances are that if you are bugging out, you will not have too much time to stop and cook a meal.
One of the top choices is protein bars. Make sure you get those that are full of calories, and try out a few brands so you can find some types that you like. There is no reason to punish yourself with a chalky, horribly flavored bar when you are bugging out.
An MRE or Meal Ready to Eat can work well too. They are standard issue in the military while in the field, and each of the packets has more than 1,200 calories. All you need to prepare them is some water. Some other good options you will want to add to your bag include trail mix, beef jerky, pouches of peanut butter, and instant oatmeal. These are easy to make, have a good number of calories, and taste decent. Make sure you add these items, and similar options, to your bugout bag if you haven’t already.
